This week we presented our ideas for our main assignment for this class, due in late June (just like an elevator pitch). For this task, I am in a group with Jack, and we’ve decided to base our project on Soundscapes. This was inspired in part by the composition “Twist” by Jodie Blackshaw, an Australian composer. Here is the section I’m drawing inspiration from (From 6:10-6:40):

This the start of the 4th movement, titled “Obsession”, in which the musicians drop their instruments to create an “Australia Bush Soundscape”, using items such as bubble wrap, pencils, hair clips and paper, as well as speciality percussive items such as a frog rasp and a gecko clacker. This then creates the sound you just heard and having just come from a very musical previous movement, it’s quite a beautiful juxtaposition.

Jack and I want to replicate this through Soundtrap, recording at home uses items found in a household, as well as recording ambiance sounds from outside. This project would be aimed at high school students, due to the accessible nature of Soundtrap as well as the ease of using items already owned. We received positive feedback from James, and are going ahead with our plan, with some websites and projects that were similar to reference as well.
