This week, we pivoted quite drastically out of my comfort zone, and looked at programming using Micro:Bits, makecode.com and Kookaberry. I can safely say I have never coded in my life, so lots of what was taught was at first hard to get a grip on due to the relatively foreign nature of it all.

After being introduced to the hardware that Micro:Bits has to offer, we then wrote the code to get the hardware to work on makecode.com (fitting name). There were two ways to view the code, visually and through more traditional text. The whole class used the visual method, as dragging and dropping pre-written code was much more approachable then writing our own code from scratch. Here’s what our end product of programming looked like:

The code we ended up making resulted in a simple call and response game, where you would have to input the correct pitches in order to win the game. It was a very simple game, but now knowing how much work goes into creating even simple lines of code has definitely been quite interesting to learn.

We then pivoted to Kookaberry, where we used much more involved code that was pre-made to run tricker programs. Ours was using a water detector to make chromatic sounds depending on the level of water detected. Here is what the code looked like:

Overall, this lesson was a lot to take in, but I can now see the benefit of using technology like this for a music project.

This week, we focused on something everyone in the class has used before – Canvas. Although we’ve all used it as students, none of us...
