This week was heavily focused on setting up recording equipment, performing and recording a piece, and then packing up. The class was divided up into groups to set up various pieces of equipment – the camera, the lighting, and the sound set up. Since the lighting set up was minimal, I helped with both the lighting and camera set up. Here is what the set up looked like:

During the talent’s rehearsal, the cameras were positioned, having one as a “redundancy” and another placed on a different angle to capture more dynamic shots. One of the main points of this lesson was having redundancy back-ups, that serve as a fail-safe if other microphones or cameras malfunction during the shoot. The lighting was adjusted once the cameras were placed, and audio was set up and tested during this time too. This setup has many moving parts, with lots of cooperation amongst people needed.

Moving onto the second important point of the lesson, a director was nominated to guide the setup and recording, as well as syncing all recording equipment. This process involved making sure everyone was “rolling”, and then counting down to a clap to sync everyone’s recording, so all footage would be easier to edit (which is the focus of next week’s lesson).

Once our talents performance of “Rich Girl” was recorded, we “cut” and packed up all equipment. This lesson was very practical heavy, with lots of hands-on activity. If our class was to record like this in the future, hopefully everything would run smoother due to our experience this lesson.
